The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prior to the opening match of IPL 2022 played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and defending champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) honoured India’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics star Lovlina Borgohain on Saturday night. Apart from her, Neeraj Chopra, India’s first and only Olympic gold medallist and men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh were also honoured.
During this, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah were present and on behalf of the board, a check of the prize money was also handed over to the players who won medals in the Tokyo Olympics. India had a memorable performance in the Tokyo Olympics last year and won 7 medals, the most in its Olympic history. This included one Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze medals. Neeraj Chopra won India the first gold medal in the track and field event in the 121-year history of the Olympics. After this achievement of Neeraj, the BCCI had announced a reward of Rs 1 crore to him. But, till now the board had not been able to hand over this prize money to him. But in a program held before the opening match of IPL 2022, Sourav Ganguly gave a check of Rs 1 crore to this star athlete from BCCI. Apart from Neeraj, BCCI also gave Rs 25 lakh as a reward to Lovlina Borgohain, who won a bronze medal in boxing in Tokyo Olympics. Earlier, BCCI also had given Rs 50-50 lakhs to Mirabai Chanu and Wrestler Ravi Dahiya. Apart from them, 25 lakh rupees were given to Bajrang Punia, who won the bronze medal and 25-25 lakhs to PV Sindhu. In Tokyo Olympics, the Indian men’s hockey team also created history by winning the bronze medal after 41 years. The BCCI also gave Rs 1.25 crore to the Indian hockey team as a reward. Captain Manpreet Singh received the check on behalf of the Indian team.
